About the inscenation

Mikhail Bulgakov’s famous satirical short story “A Dog’s Heart” is celebrating its 100th anniversary—and it is all the more surprising that a story a century old is repeating itself today: the intelligentsia is once again becoming superfluous in its own country, where people like Sharikov and Shvonder hold sway.

“A Dog’s Heart” was banned in its day and available only in samizdat form. However, after the release of the film starring Yevgeny Yevstigneyev, it gained new life, reached a wide audience, and attracted the attention of prominent theater directors. Today, this work is more relevant than ever—and so the time has come to bring it back to the stage and reinterpret it.

“A Dog’s Heart” is a production that poses questions without clear answers. The attempt to understand why the events of the early 20th century are repeating themselves in a new historical cycle is brought to life through video design, new media, and modern theatrical technologies. The story of Soviet Moscow leaves Russia, where it originated, and heads to where Bulgakov’s audience has moved today.
