About the inscenation

“God of Carnage” (Le Dieu du Carnage)by Yasmina Reza, new version of the play directed by Elena Khazarova and Jorge Guerreiro.

The premiere is to take place at the end of April 2027 in Geneva, followed by a European tour. In Prague the play will be performed on 4 June 2027.

Two neighbouring boys have been fighting in the yard – one knocked the other’s teeth out with a stick. Their parents, two respectable and well-mannered families, meet in the living room of one of them to resolve the conflict calmly, “like adults.” That is exactly how long it lasts: within an hour and a half the coffee turns into rum, politeness into open war, and the civilised adults before the audience’s eyes become the very same thugs whose interests they had come to defend.

The new version is directed by Elena Khazanova, a director, screenwriter and producer originally from Moscow who has lived and worked in Switzerland since 1989, and Jorge Guerreiro, a director, actor and playwright with more than thirty years of work on the Swiss stage, who already staged God of Carnage in Geneva in 2016. In the leading roles: Aleksandr Kuznetsov, Maria Mashkova, Artur Smolyaninov and Maria Shalayeva – well-known names of Russian theatre and cinema.

Yasmina Reza is one of the most frequently performed contemporary Francophone playwrights, author of the plays Art and God of Carnage, winner of the Tony Award and numerous international prizes. Her dramas are characterised by a precise, merciless and highly comic view of what lies behind the façade of prosperity and good manners. The Geneva production emphasises all the humour and irony of the work, turning tragedy into tragicomedy while retaining the original depth and employing cinematic techniques that give the production freshness and contemporaneity.

Language of the performance – Russian.
