About the inscenation
Jason Robert Brown’s captivating Broadway musical offers a unique insight into a five-year relationship between a man and a woman. From the initial infatuation through moments of supreme happiness to the lows and breakups. A powerful acting and singing challenge, which seems to have been written especially for Anna Prášilová Fialová and Ondřej Rychlý.
The musical The Last Five Years is one of the most distinctive and original works by American composer Jason Robert Brown. It tells the intimate story of two young people—actress Cathy and writer Jamie—who experience five years of love, ups and downs together. What makes it truly exceptional is the way the story is told: we follow Cathy from their painful breakup back to their initial enchantment, while Jamie’s journey flows classically from their first date to their final farewell. Their lives thus meet on stage at only one moment – on their wedding day.
Brown’s music, acclaimed for its melodic richness and emotional depth, combines elements of jazz, pop, and classic musical theater. This creates space for an exceptionally intense theatrical experience—and, above all, for great acting and singing opportunities. The entire musical rests on just two performers, who must act out a gripping story on stage alone, without the support of supporting characters. The Last Five Years is therefore not only an intimate account of a relationship between two people, but also a real acting challenge and an opportunity to shine.
VIP tickets (rows 10 and 11) include an exclusive backstage tour, which will take place after the performance. The meeting point for tour participants is on the left side of the stage. The tour lasts approximately 20 minutes.
We would like to inform audience members that the seats in the 1st row have limited legroom. If you need more space for any reason, please choose a different row for your seat. Thank you for your understanding.

Yesterday’s premiere confirmed that even in the Czech context, this modern “off-Broadway” style can be interpreted with ease and charm. The intimate cast of just two actors places enormous demands on the performers, which yesterday’s premiere cast met with great dedication. The musical The Last Five Years at the Hybernia Theater promises to be one of the highlights of this year’s theater season for anyone looking for more than just a spectacular show. It is a sincere, funny, and at the same time painful reflection on relationships, and after yesterday’s successful premiere, it is sure to find a loyal audience.
It’s wonderful that the large stage of the Hybernia Theater suits this intimate production so well, and the integration of the dance company—which I’d been a bit apprehensive about—is so subtle that it doesn’t dilute the main narrative in any way. The opening scene is absolutely breathtaking; it thrilled the audience at the public dress rehearsal so much that whispers of praise and admiration filled the entire hall at that moment. The Last Five Years is a production that will touch the heart of anyone who has ever experienced a relationship—with all its imperfections—for themselves.
One thing is certain: thanks to this relatively unconventional musical—which was a hit on Broadway—the Hybernia Theater has secured a production of great artistic merit. It’s definitely worth seeing, not only because it’s performed in one continuous act (the plot doesn’t falter, and the excellent performances will keep your attention), but also because, after the final note, you’ll likely find yourself reflecting on your own relationship under the influence of the experience.
I’d also venture to predict that the actors shouldn’t miss out on (at least some) nominations for the next Thálie Awards.
The lead duo is absolutely brilliant and puts many a musical veteran to shame—a great choice. They have wonderful chemistry, and they handled their demanding parts more than admirably. The characters are multifaceted and offer a wide range of emotions. The direction is imaginative, and the production never gets boring.
The incredibly amazing Anna Prášilová Fialová and Ondřej Rychlý in a superbly produced musical.
If you like at least one of the lead actors, you can’t miss this show. Anička Prášilová Fialová’s excellent performance is absolutely brilliant, both vocally and dramatically; Ondřej Rychlý is a very well-matched partner for her. The lively and beautiful music, together with the ensemble and the lead actors, creates an almost perfect chamber musical.
An intimate mosaic of relationships that, surprisingly, suits the spacious Hybernia Theater perfectly. The centerpiece is a functional stage with a rotating bar, which ingeniously navigates the story’s complex chronology. Anna Prášilová Fialová excels in the role of Cathy, conveying her emotions to the audience from the very first notes. She and the charismatic Ondřej Rychlý have excellent chemistry, even in moments when their characters pass each other on stage at different points in time. Despite the involvement of a dance company, The Last Five Years remains a sensitive, intimate production that is incredibly well done.
