About the inscenation
The Theatre of Light is a new opera-and-visual production featuring a live orchestra from the Geisslers Hofcomoedianten ensemble, inspired by the novel Le Théâtre de Slávek (2018) by the French writer Anne Delaflotte Mehdevi. The production is a co-production with the Musica Florea ensemble, the Smetana’s Litomyšl Festival and DAMU Prague.
The plot takes us to Prague in the early 18th century, when Count František Antonín Špork ran the first public theatre in Bohemia. The story follows the life of a boy named Slávek, who was left paralysed after an unfortunate collision with the Count’s carriage – and yet went on to become the first ‘master of light’ in Baroque theatre. It is a story of the relationship between two utterly different personalities, brought together by a tragic fate and a love of art; of guilt and forgiveness; and of the light that surrounds us.
The theme of light runs through the entire production – as a symbol of life, art and the inner strength that transforms pain into creativity.
